Humane Society of Mecklenburg County

Charlotte, North Carolina

Cause Description:
The Humane Society of Mecklenburg County (HSMC) is the oldest Humane Society in Mecklenburg County and was established in 1938. We are an independent, non-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to improving animal welfare through a targeted spay/neuter program in conjunction with humane education programs. For over 60 years, we have been dedicated to educating children and adults about responsible pet ownership, the importance of adopting homeless animals and the urgency of spaying or neutering their pets. We also work to provide effective means for the prevention, suppression, and relief of cruelty to animals. Over the past several years, the Humane Society of Mecklenburg County has worked to develop a program called S.N.I.P. (Spay/Neuter Intervention Program) that will reduce animal admissions to the Charlotte Mecklenburg Animal Control Bureau. By providing free spay/neuter surgeries to qualified applicants, S.N.I.P. will decrease the number of animals entering Animal Control that will, in turn, decrease the euthanasia rate. By reducing the number of animals coming into Animal Control, S.N.I.P. will also help to increase the adoption rate of these homeless animals. In 2003, Animal Control brought in over 21,000 cats and dogs and had to, unfortunately, euthanize over 15,000 animals because there were not enough people coming in to adopt them. The S.N.I.P. program is expensive, but can we really put a price on the number of animals this program will save? Similar spay/neuter programs such as the ones in New Hampshire, Utah and San Francisco have been extremely successful when properly funded. With the help of Mecklenburg residents and businesses, in six years we can reduce the number of animals entering our local Animal Shelter by 50 to 70 percent, which would save the lives of thousands of cats and dogs per year. Pet overpopulation is a community problem and everyone can do something to help. By establishing long-term partnerships with businesses and residents within the community, we can obtain our goal and have a positive impact on the homeless animals with Mecklenburg County and Animal Control. The Humane Society of Mecklenburg County hopes to make Mecklenburg a county in which all adoptable animals are found compatible and loving homes. It is only through the generosity, understanding and dedication of residents and businesses that we will be successful. Above all, we want people to sponsor this program they feel it is a worthy cause and would be proud to support it. The HSMC is supported by private donations from residents and local businesses and we do not receive any financial assistance from the City of Charlotte, Mecklenburg County or State of North Carolina.
