The Legal Aid Society provides low-income citizens with a most important tool for defending their rights: a lawyer. Legal Aid does more than sue on behalf of poor people. Quite often, clients simply need an explanation of what their rights and responsibilities are in specific situations. Similarly, landlords, business owners, school officials and state administrators also need to understand their responsibilities. While low-income people face a wide array of legal issues, legal aid staff focus primarily on issues of housing, public benefits, family law, and special issues that seniors and people with disabilities face.
