A Different Breed
Dallas, Texas
Cause Description:
A Different Breed Animal Rescue (ADB) began as a
foster based organization with adoptable pets being
kept in temporary foster homes until they could be
permanently placed. Initially, ADB acted as a
channel for animals from Dallas Animal Services
(DAS). But, as DAS developed other adoption outlets
such as PETCO and PetSmart, ADB began to grow into
an independent rescue, pulling pets from animal
control facilities with high kill rates in and
around Dallas or simply helping homeless animals off
the streets. Today, ADB continues to grow, becoming
one of the larger rescue groups in the Dallas area
and servicing over 270 dogs in 2009 alone. Many of
these animals found their forever homes through the
ADB store front located at Beltline and Preston
Roads in Dallas. Adoption events are held at the
storefront every Saturday from 12:30 to 5:00.
As well as placing animals in loving, permanent
homes, ADB provides the food, medical care
(including vaccines and spay/neuter), collars,
leashes, toys, housing, transportation, and love and
attention that each rescue needs and deserves until
they find their own family. Over the last 6 years,
ADB has expanded so much that foster homes alone are
not sufficient in number to care for all the animals
assisted by ADB. In addition to the foster homes,
ADB is now also leasing a 12 acre property where the
majority of animals are housed while waiting to find
their permanent homes. ADB has recently upgraded
the property with construction of a building to
house dogs as they are brought into the adoption
program. The building includes dog runs with dog
doors and an outdoor fenced-in play area that is
covered.
All the work accomplished under the ADB name is
supported by a diverse staff of volunteers who share
one common belief… all animals deserve a chance to
lead a long, happy life in a safe and loving home.
These individuals tirelessly devote their personal
time (and sometimes money!) at the storefront
adoption events, festival adoption events, and
fundraisers with the sole purpose of helping animals
in need. ADB hopes to aid even more pets in 2010 by
constructing a second building on the leased
property to allow the rescue to house more animals,
on a short-term basis, while ADB finds their perfect
home.
