HEAF helps severely disadvantaged inner city minority children to acquire the attitudes and skills that will permit them to lead satisfying and productive lives in mainstream American life. Our chess teams rank "number one in the nation", our students attend the finest colleges and most selective and competitive public high schools in the country, and the Director of our chess programs just became the first African American International Grand Master in the history of chess! We have never had a single child drop out of high school or college; and this year our 4th grade elementary school grade achieved the highest reading scores ("number one!") in the entire city of New York. This year HEAF has opened its Harlem Chess Center, which will teach chess to any Harlem child who wishes to learn. Our Board includes such members as General Colin Powell and Professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr. of Harvard University.
