People's Test Preparation Service (ASUC/PTPS)

Cause Description:
PTPS was founded in 1995 and is a non-profit, UC Berkeley student-run organization dedicated to providing standardized test skills to communities neglected by profit-oriented test preparation companies. Contrary to the Educational Testing Service (ETS), we at PTPS do not believe that the SAT is a measure of intelligence. Rather, it is a test that with proper coaching and money can be manipulated and bought. Commercial test preparation companies compound existing cultural and class bias on the SAT by providing services to wealthy communities in which students are already college-bound. Our mission is to combat these inequalities by providing free SAT classes to students in low-income and underrepresented communities. While we do receive operating funds from the University, our other costs such as food to encourage and reward our students are not covered. We are also seeking funds to expand PTPS' geographical scope to outside the San Francisco Bay Area.
