Foster Reading Center

Evanston, Illinois

Cause Description:
Since 1984, the Foster Reading Center has been a haven for 200 elementary and middle school children each year whose parents cannot afford after-school programs and who cannot pick them up from school each day. The center offers 2 programs: For elementary school children, a reading-focused after-school program is offered every day in a friendly, home-type library setting in the Family Focus Community Center in Evanston's West side. Second, for preschool children from 1 to 4 years old, a "Roving Readers" program sends paid tutors to Evanston day care centers to read twice a week with more than 150 full time day care children--mostly 3 years old or younger. The Readers are a highlight of these children's days and a leg up on a literate future. Without your help, the Center might be forced to shut its doors at the end of this school year due to high operating costs.
