Cause Description:
The May Arboretum Society was created to support the Wilber D. May Arboretum and Botanical Garden, in the Rancho San Rafael Regional Park, in Reno, Nevada. The botanical garden covers 12 acres and is comprised of wetland habitats, outdoor courtyards, tree groves and specialty gardens. The high desert May Arboretum collection represents the Transitional Zone, between the Sierra Nevada and the Great Basin. Plants that grow in this botanical area adapt to a challenging environment that averages only seven inches of precipitation a year, with daily temperature variations of 50 degrees or more, with a growing season of only 100 days. The Arboretum's mission is to serve as a demonstration garden, education resource, and a botanical research facility for the community. The Gardens offer a combination of science and aesthetics and provide displays of native and adaptable plant species, shrubs and wildflowers.
