Founded in 1969, the Shriver Center is a private, nonprofit institution which seeks to promote understanding of human neurological and behavioral development. Its mission is to improve the lives of people with mental retardation and other developmental disabilities through basic and applied scientific research, graduate and postgraduate professional training, clinical services and community outreach and education. Founded in 1969, the center was named to honor Eunice Kennedy Shriver for her lifelong commitment to improving the quality of life for persons with mental retardation.The Shriver Center receives funding and support from federal and state agencies and private donors.
