At Helen Woodward Animal Center, people help animals and animals help people. Under one management, this unique organization with varied services benefits the community by providing educational and therapeutic programs for people and humane care and adoption for animals. We believe life is more precious when trust, unconditional love, and respect exist as the primary bond between animals and one another. PROGRAMS No-Kill Adoption Program provides loving care and finds new homes for nearly 2,000 orphaned cats, dogs, kittens and puppies each year. Pet Encounter Therapy (P.E.T.) offers the tactile benefit and unconditional love only animals can provide to senior homes, centers for abused children, Alzheimer facilities, and hospitals. Therapeutic Riding gives children and adults with physical and mental challenges the opportunity to enhance balance and muscle development, concentration, short-term memory, and hand-eye coordination by providing them with weekly riding sessions on specially trained horses. AniMeals reaches out to the elderly and the disabled by providing free pet food for their “best friend” who is oftentimes their main reason for getting up each day. Humane Education Programs teach children respect, compassion, empathy and an appreciation of all living things through our special animal friends. The AniMobile, a traveling classroom, visits Title I (low-income) schools throughout San Diego County to reach 10,000 at-risk children each year. Community Equine Hospital treats a variety of horses ranging from thoroughbreds to family pets with state-of-the-art equipment.
