Cause Description:
The El Paso Symphony Orchestra (EPSO) is proud to provide Tocando (toh-cahn-doh) – “to play”, an after-school program inspired by the El Sistema movement whose intended outcome is to empower children in challenging social and economic conditions in order to improve their sense of community and opportunity through immersive music learning and performing. Children acquire valuable tools of teamwork, self-confidence, leadership, and academic success. Tocando currently serves sixty students at Hart Elementary, a Title 1 school located in an infamously impoverished neighborhood of El Paso called El Segundo Barrio. Students participate through full scholarships provided by financial supporters. Tocando launched in September 2013 with thirty eight students at Hart Elementary School, in partnership with the El Paso Independent School District. In 2014-15, its second year, Tocando’s partnerships expand to include Paso del Norte Health Foundation under its IGNITE Initiative and serve sixty students. In addition to string instruments Tocando expands to include wind and brass instruments. Tocando will grow to ninety students and will include a second location in the summer of 2015.
