Delaware Coalition Against Domestic Violence

Wilmington, Delaware

Cause Description:
The Delaware Coalition Against Domestic Violence is a statewide, nonprofit organization of domestic violence agencies and individuals working to eliminate domestic violence through: •Acting as an educational and informational resource to our member agencies and the community; •Advocating for domestic violence concerns in Delaware; •Providing a strong, unified statewide voice for victims of domestic violence and their children, domestic violence programs, and victim service providers. Our Goals •Serve as a strong, unified, statewide voice for battered women and their children, domestic violence programs, victim workers, and task forces. •Educate Coalition members, the media, legislature, and service systems about the dynamics of domestic violence and societal attitudes that promote or perpetuate violence. •Increase public awareness about the connection between violence against women and other forms of oppression in our society. •Provide networking, support, and training opportunities to battered women/formerly battered women and to the public. Facilitate skill sharing, leadership development, and technical assistance to member programs. •Challenge the Coalition members and societal institutions to provide responsive services and implement sensitive policies for battered women from diverse groups and their children. •Engage in any activities which will further the goals and mission of the Coalition. Our Philosophy We believe in the right of all persons to live without fear, abuse, oppression and violence. We oppose all forms of dominance over others. We believe in the need to change societal attitudes that encourage the abuse of power to control others and we are committed to this struggle. We believe that work against societal violence must be achieved through networking locally as well as nationally, through direct services, community education, and political action. We should be accountable to our communities, to battered/formerly battered women from diverse groups and to their children. We believe services should always be accessible to and responsive to battered women from diverse groups, regardless of age, ethnicity, sexual preference, or differences in physical ability. We believe ethical communication and a spirit of cooperation among battered women's advocates and programs are necessary to change social attitudes. Since the struggle of battered women is related to the struggle for empowerment, we are committed to maintaining a supportive, noncompetitive atmosphere in all aspects of our programs, so that open communication, respect, and cooperation will be encouraged among all members. We believe batterers should be held accountable for their actions. We encourage the participation of all persons or groups who are committed to the struggle to end domestic violence.
