Cause Description:
In 2004, New Jersey After 3 was created to expand learning time through high-quality, cost-effective afterschool programs across urban, suburban and rural communities. As the first statewide public/private partnership of its kind in the nation, New Jersey After 3 works with public schools and community-based nonprofits to deliver effective, research-based afterschool programs each school day, expanding learning time for thousands of students by more than 33% in 29 public schools statewide. New Jersey After 3 programs: (1) keep children safe between the hours of 3 pm and 6 pm; (2) improve student achievement; (3) support working families; and (4) promote positive youth development. Since 2004, New Jersey After 3's comprehensive, evidence-based, high quality afterschool programs served more than 75,000 students; leveraged over $32,000,000 in private and other outside support (in FY 11 producing a 150% rate of return); kept administrative costs around 5%; maintained a remarkably low cost per child (less than half of what of other high quality afterschool programs cost according to a large-scale national study); supported over 1,500 afterschool jobs; and, maintained an outstanding average daily attendance rate of over 80%. In a time of shrinking school budgets and escalating education costs, New Jersey After 3 ensures cost-effective, high-quality activities and experiences that support students, families and entire school communities.
