Cause Description:
As a project of Queen's Project on International Development (QPID), it seems only fitting to start by explaining what QPID is and what it aims to achieve through its initiatives. Since its founding in 1990, QPID has continued to grow over the years becoming the largest international development group on the Queen's University campus. QPID's Vision: To foster a development consciousness in the Queen’s community and abroad as a catalyst for local and global change. QPID's Mission: To create a venue for collaboration among students and members of our host communities to share knowledge and promote development consciousness. QPID uses a holistic approach to development through engagement in critical thinking and informed action. A large part of building and embodying this consciousness comes from the projects that QPID volunteers participate in worldwide each summer. Whether these projects are located in Kingston, in Canada, or internationally, they all strive to practice this collaboration and holistic approach by building partnerships with local organizations to satisfy the needs identified by our host communities on an individual basis. And now, where do I fit into all of this? I am currently completing my honours degree in Global Development and Political Studies at Queen’s University. After chairing various projects and clubs on campus, I have recently been hired for a new, less familiar leadership position with QPID as a regional Site Director. And so, this summer I will be travelling to Botswana for fours months to oversee a team of summer project volunteers and QPID’s various project partnerships across the country, working with local NGOs in the areas of human rights and HIV/AIDS. As you can imagine, I am beyond excited for this opportunity, but I need your help to make it a reality! Given the costs associated with the broad range of sustainable development initiatives we hope to contribute and build in our host communities, each member of Team Botswana has been given a $2000 fundraising goal to help fund our projects this summer.
