Education Through Music
New York, New York
Since 1991, Education Through Music (ETM) has promoted the use of music in inner-city schools, as a means of enhancing students' academic performance and general development.
Education Through Music forms long-term partnerships with inner-city elementary, middle and K-8 schools that lack the resources to develop school-wide music programs. Every student receives music as a core subject. Music is taught both as a subject in its own right and as a means of supporting learning in other areas. Each partnership aims to support students' learning and development in music and in all areas, and to build capacity among school and community members to sustain programs.
ETM hires music teachers to serve as music faculty where needed, so that each partner school can provide music as a core subject to every student, both general and special education, regardless of talent or ability. We work with a variety of collaborating organizations to provide enrichment opportunities to students. We provide ongoing training and mentoring to music teachers; professional development to classroom teachers; and one-on-one and group leadership and strategic planning guidance to principals. We speak at parent meetings. We assess programs through ongoing communication, skills assessments, observation rubrics, surveys and other analysis.
In addition to its core New York City partner school activities, ETM provides advisory services to schools and organizations in other communities, and we have licensed an independent organization to replicate our model in Los Angeles.
