Cause Description:
The International MotherBaby Childbirth Initiative (IMBCI) promotes the health and wellbeing of all women and babies during pregnancy, birth and breastfeeding. The IMBCI consists of 10 specific Steps that institute optimal maternity care practices. The purpose of the IMBCI 10 Steps is to improve care throughout the birth and perinatal continuum in order to save lives, prevent illness and harm from the overuse of unnecessary obstetric technological interventions, and promote health for mothers and babies around the world. The IMBCI is evidence-based, drawing from research reports and a body of expert inputs to 1) assess and re-develop a process that changes the structure of maternity care in individual facilities around the world and 2) eliminate disrespect and abuse during a vulnerable period in the lives of mothers and babies.
