Cause Description:
The Mountain Parks Foundation assists California State Parks in funding educational
activities that enrich visitor experiences at Henry Cowell and Big Basin Redwoods
State Parks.
California’s oldest state park, Big Basin was created in 1902 from the first major
campaign to preserve virgin coastal redwood forests. Since then, citizen activism,
private donations, and state funding have helped expand the park to 18,000 acres of
forests, chaparral and coastal wetlands.
The Mountain Parks Foundation supports the Big Basin and Henry Cowell interpretive and
educational programs by helping fund supplies and staffing. Current projects in 2010
include fundraising to upgrade the Henry Cowell Nature Center deck and renovation of
the historic campfire center at Big Basin Redwoods.
