Heads Up: A University Neighborhood Initiative

Cause Description:
At Heads Up, we are committed to advancing a society where all people get a fair shot to pursue their dreams of a better life. Our mission is to provide low-income children and families with the learning opportunities they need to succeed while fostering a new generation of leaders committed to strengthening their communities. To that end, we currently run after-school tutoring, mentoring, and summer learning programs for 400 grade school children in the most impoverished parts of Washington, D.C., drawing particularly on the untapped potential of college students as our workforce. At the same time, we help these college students and other neighborhood residents understand their social responsibilities and we train them in the skills needed to carry them out. In the next year, we anticipate expanding our work to include college preparatory programs for teenagers and family literacy programs for parents.
