Cause Description:
Working Theater, New York’s only professional off-Broadway theater company that produces plays for and about the working men and women of New York, will celebrate their 25th Anniversary Season in 2010 with 25 events over 25 weeks. Working Theater specifically serves the postal workers, bus drivers and building services workers and many others who keep New York City running. Through ticket subsidies, an active commissioning program, relevant productions, a successful grassroots audience development program and a pioneering arts-in-education program, we attract an audience that reflects the full socio-economic diversity of New York. For 24 years we have provided the transformational experience of live off-Broadway theater to this broad, often-overlooked constituency and directly offered them a creative outlet through our educational program TheaterWorks!. The Theater has commissioned and produced more than 60 world premieres of culturally diverse new plays, had 21 original plays published (2, including 2008's Our Dad is in Atlantis, featured and fully reprinted in American Theater Magazine), 6 Drama Desk nominations, 3 Audelco Awards and a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Ensemble for Tabletop.
