Cause Description:
Located in Peterborough Ontario, the Kawartha Turtle Trauma Centre provides medical and rehabilitative care to injured native turtles. The turtles are cared for by veterinarians and centre volunteers until they are ready to be released back into the wild. Many turtle species in Ontario are "species at risk", and they need all the help they can get. Each year many turtles, especially females en route to nesting sites, are hit by cars. The Objects of the Centre are: (a) to assist in the recovery of turtles native to Ontario; (b) to reduce road mortality of turtles native to Ontario; (c) to educate the public about the status and ecological role of turtles native to Ontario; and (d) to promote turtle habitat protection and stewardship.
