Alternative Living for the Aging (ALA) began in 1978 because of the belief that older people needed alternatives to living alone and alternatives to institutionalization. ALA is dedicated to providing affordable, safe housing alternatives for low-income older people, where they will not be afraid or alone. ALA's purpose is to help people remain independent through their interdependence in affordable shared and cooperative housing.
