Cause Description:
Working Dogs for Conservation (WD4C), is a Montana-based non-profit organization putting the keen canine nose to work to help endangered species in some of the most stunning places around the world. WD4C trains dogs utilizing techniques similar to those used in search and rescue, narcotic, and cadaver detection disciplines, using scent to locate specific wildlife scats, live animals and plants. When combined with technologies available for the analysis of DNA extracted from scat, scientists can verify species, sex, and potentially determine population size, home range, paternity, and kinship while the analysis of endocrine extracted from scat can determine the reproductive status of individuals. As leaders in the field, WD4C has worked with more than 30 conservation groups in 5 different countries on projects for 20 species of wild animals and plants. Many of these projects have been ground-breaking within the field of conservation biology. To boot, many of our specially trained dogs are rescued from shelters or frustrated owners, thus we save dogs that in turn help save wild life and wild places.
