Cause Description:
For many people at any given moment in life, it can be a struggle to get through the day. The mission of Natural Connections Learning Center is to cultivate life skills through building restorative connections with animals, nature, and expressive arts. PROBLEM: On average, we are “disconnected” from the natural world. Obesity, depression, anxiety, and school drop-out rates continue to increase and impact youth at a younger age. SOLUTION: Current research shows natural connections – activities in nature and with animals – increases self-esteem, reduces stress, invites creative thinking and problem solving where one feels safe, and gets people physically active. Through organizational growth and capacity building, NCLC is positioning its programs as a first choice for healing, education and wellness services for all members in the community. NCLC’s programs and services are experiential - hands-on and learning through doing – whereby participants are actively engaged in a direct experience of developing a relationship with animals, such as horses, dogs, cats and chickens. Through these experiences, participants gain powerful insights into personal behaviors, thought patterns and unconscious reactions. The learning and change comes from identifying these insights, seeing how their behaviors effect another being that is non-human, and discovering methods of working together in a more effective and mindful fashion.
