Watauga County Humane Society is nestled in the northwestern part of the mountains of North Carolina. It is a no-for-profit, volunteer organization. Only the Shelter manager and cleaning help receive a salary. The Society survives completely on donations and money earned by the Society. 100% of all donations stays with the society. Since 1970, this organization has provided services not only for Watauga County, but also for neighboring counties and Tennessee. It has an agressive adoption policy and small euthanasia rate. ALL animals are sterilized before leaving the Shelter, and help is given to the public for sterilizing their animals. Hopefully, this may reduce the horrible problem of animal overpopulation. This year, 1280 animals were turned in to the Shelter: 760 were adopted: 350 were euthanized and assistance with sterilization was given to 708 animals.
