Cause Description:
Family Service Association was founded as the Organized Charities of Atlantic City on March 16, 1909. At the time, its founder, Sarah West Leeds, and other local stakeholders were involved in the area’s earliest foundations of social consciousness by responding to the needs of the city’s poor seasonal laborers and their families. Due to the seasonal nature of the island’s industry most of the city’s work force was without income in the coldest parts of the year, leaving them without resources for food, shelter or clothing. To address this need, the mission of the newly established charity was to provide “tangible relief services for families and individual family members, and to coordinate services between charities in order to avoid duplication of effort.” The once small “Family Service Association of Atlantic City now evolved into four distinct entities: Family Service Association (FSA) - a non-profit (501c3) multi-service organization providing mental health outpatient services, day treatment, adolescent and older adult services. Family Service Operation (FSO) - a holding company with the purpose of managing assets and providing management services to the three substructures; Family Service Development (FSD) - a corporation that provides fund raising, public relations and volunteer services to the entire structure; and, Family Service Enterprise (FSE) - a corporation with the purpose of providing creative and inventive human service programs. These corporate changes enabled the organization to strengthen its fiscal position and ensure that new programs and services would be available as need arose in the community. Since that period, services have been expanded to include juvenile justice programs, partial care programs for children, two family success centers, parenting programs and expanded fundraising and volunteer efforts. Family Service Association, Inc. remains the flagship operation and holds the non-profit 501c3 status for grants and contracts. The agency serves more than 22,500 children, youth and families per year and is able to create new services to meet the ever changing needs of the community. Today, as when it was founded more than one hundred years ago, Family Service Association continues to be a leader in social consciousness in Southern New Jersey with its mission to “strengthen individuals and families so that they can meet the challenges of life in positive and constructive ways.” When Family Service Association opened in 1909, it provided “tangible relief services for families and individual family members”. Over a hundred years later the organization is still reaching out to the community to provide the following ‘relief’ services:
