The Hot Springs Jazz Society was founded in 1991 by a group of local jazz fans as a non-profit organization to develop and present educational jazz programs for the entire community, focusing on the preservation and perpetuation of jazz music in all forms. The Hot Springs Jazz Society sponsors many events throughout the year, but the unquestionable highlight is the Hot Springs JazzFest, which is held the second weekend in September. This three day musical marathon brings the finest jazz performers to Hot Springs National Park. Now in its sixteenth consecutive year, the JazzFest will focus its attention on performers from within Arkansas more than out. To complement the exemplary performers of past JazzFests such as Christian Scott, Terence Blanchard, Herb Ellis and Herman Green, future JazzFests will identify the musical talents in Arkansas in order to cast a stronger vision of the value of jazz within our community. Beginning in 1997, each April the Jazz Society sponsors the Scholastic Jazz Festival in historic downtown Hot Springs National Park. More than a dozen high school and college jazz ensembles from across the state take the stage in an outdoor performance of jazz music. This program offers music students an opportunity to fine-tune their skills in a public setting. Here they gain valuable tools including a sense of self-achievement, which will aid in their successes as adults, regardless of their chosen professions. Education is a priority goal for the Jazz Society. Each summer deserving and talented students from area high schools are awarded full scholarships to the prestigious Drury Jazz Camp in Missouri. In letters received from students having attended the summer camp, the Jazz Society has confirmed the benefits of this program. Those who have attended the camp note their appreciation for the opportunity to study and play beside like minded music students and having the increased exposure of music style not widely available within the public school system.
