Black-Footed Ferret Recovery Implementation Team

Pierre, South Dakota

Cause Description:
The black-footed ferret is the most endangered mammal in N. America. Indigenous to the Rocky Mtns and beyond -- north and south -- it is a wild inhabitant of the short and mid-grass prairie, not to be confused with the domestic, pet ferret. The Black-Footed Ferret Recovery Implementation Team is a 25-member partner- ship of nonprofits, gov't, nongov'tl agencies and tribal representatives working to keep the black-footed ferret and the prairie grasslands ecosystem from extinction. Down to just 18 in the wild twelve years ago, black-footed ferrets today number about 450. Captive breeding and wild release programs are costly and require the efforts of all of us to ensure the ferrets' survival into the 21st century. Please help us save this winsome creature, a living reminder of our Western legacy of fierce, wild beauty.
