Cause Description:
Advocates founded and supports New Orleans Center for Science & Math, a high quality public high school program of hands-on science and math for motivated, "at-risk" urban youth. There is NO TESTING for admission and the student body is 92% African-American, 70% poverty and 63% female. These students represent a very broad range of skills. Ninety-two percent of the Class of "99 were accepted into college, with the remaining students enrolling in high tech programs in the military. Highlights include: a computer training program in which 75% of the students taking the Microsoft Certified Professional exam passed on the first try (national average is 30%); 60 science or math related summer internships; and high test scores despite the broad academic range of the students.
