Cause Description:
The Hermann Park Conservancy is a non-profit citizens' organization dedicated to the stewardship and improvement of Hermann Park -- today and for generations to come. The Hermann Park Conservancy's primary goals include: providing a focus for the improvement of Hermann Park through park improvement projects and maintenance initiatives; promoting the enjoyment of Hermann Park through education and outreach; and preserving Hermann Park's natural resources and increase the size and health of the tree canopy. Ninety-two-year-old Hermann Park, bequeathed to the city by George Hermann in 1914, is one of Houston's most historic and busiest urban green spaces, attracting some 5.5 million visitors each year. The Park's 445 acres form a cultural and recreational hub surrounded by the Texas Medical Center, Rice University, the Museum District, and various residential neighborhoods. Houston's METRORail line runs through Hermann Park on Fannin Street, which renders the area easily accessible to a wide variety of visitors. Visitors to Hermann Park can ride on the miniature train or on a pedal boat on the Park's eight-acre McGovern Lake; attend free performances at Miller Outdoor Theatre; visit the Houston Zoo, Houston Museum of Natural Science, Japanese Garden, Rose Garden, Houston Garden Center, Houston's International Sculpture Garden, and the Pioneer Memorial Log House Museum; play golf on an 18-hole public course; or simply enjoy the Park's many picnic areas and nature trails. Additional amenities include a playground with a waterpark area, several public plazas, and a grand reflection pool surrounded by benches and walking paths. The Park is a popular destination for walkers and joggers.
