Cause Description:
The mission of Generation Connection: Grandparents & Others Raising Relative’s Children Program is to keep children safe within a relative’s home, assist the grandparent or other relative caregiver by providing support, education, information, and resources for children, youth, and adults and strengthen these extended kin families in order that they may provide safe, secure and nurturing homes for children who’s parents can not take care of them. Generation Connection: Grandparents & Others Raising Relative’s Children program currently serves grandparents and others raising relative’s children in five Counties of Minnesota. This program offers ten support groups, as well as educational opportunities for relative caregivers. Individual counseling and consultation are provided for relative caregivers through home or office visits, as well as by telephone. Grandparents who have been successfully raising grandchildren are invited to serve other caregivers as Mentors. The children in kinship care participate in supportive playgroups that meet during the caregiver’s monthly meetings. Adolescents meet for regular activities and use a telephone group for support. Affordable recreational activities aimed at strengthening “grandfamilies” as well as their informal support network are offered on a regular basis. Recreational activities include winter overnight camps, holiday parties, summer picnics and special events.
