Cause Description:
Since 1976, The Federation of Italian American Organizations (F.I.A.O.) has been serving the needs of the Italian American community and the community at large of the City of New York. F.I.A.O. has been in the forefront in developing and implementing programs designed to empower people and give them the resources necessary to confront their problems. F.I.A.O. is a 501 C3 non-for-profit, charitable agency which serves youth, seniors, immigrants and the entire family unit in its two social service offices and in its twenty after- school tutorial, recreational and counseling programs. F.I.A.O. stresses education - whether by aiding students to stay in school, training them to serve others, developing in them leadership and high self esteem, providing them with significant scholarships, or finding them meaningful employment. Seniors are provided with social services, and volunteers escort them to neighborhood shops. Immigrants are assisted in obtaining citizenship status and voting privileges. The family unit is offered counseling, educational opportunities, and cross generation cultural experiences. F.I.A.O. networks with the Republic of Italy and several of its Southern Regions like Sicily and Puglia to maintain the Italian language and culture, and expand entrepreneurial opportunities. Fund raising has become a vital function of the F.I.A.O. in order to realize its programs and services to the community. The proceeds from this Fund Raising Gala enables F.I.A.O. to maintain, enlarge, and expand its programs and establish a fund to construct a Community Building Center.
