Cause Description:
PURPOSE OF REQUEST The Niles North High School Theatre Department has been invited to attend the American High School Theatre Festival, which exists as part of The Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland, in August of 2006. After being nominated from among thousands of high schools, a rigorous evaluation process began, conducted by theatre professionals from top universities. Only twenty schools with the highest quality theatre programs were selected to represent the United States internationally. While youth often focus on immediate gratification, it is reassuring to find a group of students focused on long-term goals, that is, taking projects from concept to reality with no reward other than the project itself. And it is pleasing to find an event like The Fringe Festival that, since its inception, has been focused on peaceful exchange, like a performing arts version of the Olympics. This type of environment is excellent training for the artists of the future, creating a truly hopeful tomorrow. The American High School Theater Festival, as part of The Fringe Festival, will not only provide our students an opportunity to perform, but to witness other performances from around the world. Our students will spend a large portion of the day delving into the lives of a culturally diverse group of other students, as well as mingling with theatre professionals. They will work collaboratively to create an aesthetic experience for others. This is what they will bring back to their community; this is what they will take with them for the rest of their lives. Niles North Theatre students and staff will attend the festival during the first two weeks of August, 2006. The cost of this experience is $4,690 per person. We anticipate that fifteen (15) students will attend the Fringe Festival along with four (4) staff (acting in a supervisory capacity for rehearsals, lights, sound, and publicity as well as chaperones). The total cost will be about $190,810.
