Every day, dogs enter into San Francisco Department of Animal Care and Control’s Custody and Isolation sections, where they live in a cage, separated from visitors, stimulation, and other dogs—a life most of them will endure for weeks, months, or longer. These are the most invisible shelter residents, separated from adoptable dogs and typical shelter volunteers. Give a Dog a Bone, which primarily consists of a dedicated group of specially trained volunteers, ensures that every animal in San Francisco Department of Animal Care and Control’s Custody and Isolation sections is treated with compassion and kindness in the belief that they are living beings deserving of quality of life. Give a Dog a Bone changes the bleak existence of dogs in long-term shelter care—one chew toy, one play session, one belly-rub at a time.
