Cause Description:
Goal: The goals of the South Hamilton Animal Alliance are to decrease the number of stray and feral animals by instituting a Trap-Neuter-Release (TNR) program for feral cats, and providing opportunities for adoption for some of these strays into loving, forever homes. Within the TNR program, stray cats are captured humanely with a live trap. They are taken to the animal hospital for surgical sterilization, administered a rabies vaccine, given any other medical care as deemed necessary by the doctor, and released back to their familiar habitat to live their lives, offspring free. By releasing fixed cats back into their environment, we are not only halting the production of kittens, we are also 'vaccinating' the street from an influx of new, unfixed cats. If one was to round up all the cats and kill them, new unfixed cats quickly move into the territory, and one never breaks the cycle of unwanted litters being created, males fighting, howling late into the night, and other problems unfixed cats tend to create. By releasing fixed cats already living in town, they take up food resources and guard the territory from new unfixed cats. TNR is much better received by the public. Your neighbors are more likely to support a feral release program than a round-up for killing the cats. Within the Adoption program, all dogs and cats over 4 months of age will be spayed or neutered prior to adoption. A spay/neuter cash deposit will be required of any animal adopted out prior to being surgically altered. All dogs over the age of one year will be Heartworm tested, and all cats will be tested for Leukemia and FIV. All dogs will be vaccinated for distemper and rabies, dewormed, and given an identification tag.
