Cause Description:
Relay For Life is an overnight team event, which is a celebration of life for cancer survivors and the community. It is a relay in which participants take turns walking, running, or jogging laps around the track while enjoying music, food, games, prizes, and camaraderie. During the event, information about cancer prevention and awareness of American Cancer Society educational programs are provided. Funds raised before and during the event are used for cancer research and patient service programs. One of the special activities at Relay For Life is the Luminary Ceremony. In the evening, luminary candles are placed around the track and lit in honor of cancer survivors or in memory of loved ones who have lost their battle with cancer. Relay For Life mobilizes communities across the country to celebrate survivorship, remember those who lost their lives to cancer, and raise money for the fight against cancer. This is the American Cancer Society's signature event. The Rockville Relay For Life is held on the 2nd Saturday in June at a local community high school.
