CAMP SWAN WHAT IS CAMP SWAN? Camp Swan is a 3 day, 2 night camp for children ages 7-12 who have lost some significant in their lives. This camp is sponsored by Canon Hospice and the Akula Foundation. Camp Swan is designed to provide an experience in outdoor living combined with therapeutic activities to facilitate grieving in a fun and naturalistic setting. The camp is staffed by volunteer counselors including bereavement counselors, social works, doctors, nurses, students, and interested adults from the community. The ratio of camper to volunteer will be approximately one volunteer to two campers. This weekend camp will accommodate approximately 40 children. Meals will be provided by various community organizations and restaurants. The campers will be organized in groups, older and younger girls and boys. Each group will have a team of camp volunteers assigned to work with them. Each group will pick its own name and created a sense of group identity. In addition to working with each group on small group tasks, camp counselors will be assigned to have one-on-one meetings with one or two children in each group. All campers will follow a schedule which will include meals, snack times and small and large group therapeutic activities and recreational activities. Therapeutic activities will include the used of art, music, drama and sharing designed to help campers to better understand and express their grief. Recreational activities will include, fishing, games and educational lectures. Camp Swan is open to all children ages 7-12 in the Greater New Orleans Area on a space available basis. It is anticipated that the Camp will provide a healing experience for bereaved children and further enhance a feeling of service and good will in the community serviced by the sponsoring organizations
