JVS is a comprehensive human service organization that helps people throughout the Detroit Metropolitan area realize their life's potential by providing employment and supportive services. Our mission statement reads, "JVS helps people meet life challenges affecting their self-sufficiency through counseling, training and support services in accordance with Jewish values of equal opportunity, compassion, responsibility and the steadfast belief that the best way to help people is to make it possible for them to help themselves." JVS served over 30,000 in 2003-2004. That represented a 25% increase in our client base from the previous year. In addition to providing direct services, JVS' public resources include its libraries, seminars and training workshops which are open to everyone. Our core programs include those that serve: 1. People with Disabilities- JVS programs assist people with developmental, emotional, physical and other disabilities by providing: interest and ability assessments; job search resources; skills training; job placement and on-the-job supports. 2. Senior Adults - JVS serves older adults through programs that include: work activities to help seniors remain active and alert; day care to enhance quality of life for people with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia; supports for care-givers; volunteer opportunities; and home health aides. 3. Students and Youth - JVS helps youth prepare for adulthood and the working world through: job training and placement; internships; scholarships and financial aid guidance; educational counseling; and transition services from school to work for young people with disabilities. 4. People with Economic and Educational Disadvantages - JVS services help people who lack the background and resources to find jobs and move to self-sufficiency without assistance by providing: basic academic courses; job training; referrals to community-based service; transportation; housing referrals; individualized case management; and support services for individuals who were in poverty, homeless, recovering from substance abuse and/or histories of chronic mental illness, ex-offenders, and otherwise at risk. 5. Job Seekers - JVS programs assist working people or those in transition find and obtain the right or next job and/or career by providing targeted opportunities for: job searching; networking; developing and researching job leads; writing resumes; and referrals to companies who list job openings with JVS. 6. The Business Community - Employers are served by JVS programs that: prescreen job applicants; offer customized workforce training and development; referrals of qualified candidates; and counseling for workers affecting by company restructuring and relocations. Numerous employers list job openings with JVS to attract qualified applicants. 7. Home Buyers - JVS helps families realize the dream of homeownership by working with lending institutions and realtors and providing financial assistance for down payments. 8. Michigan Works! Detroit's Work Place, funded by the City of Detroit's Employment and Training Department, a JVS division provides one-stop job and career services that benefit Detroit residents by: streamlining employment services and housing them under one roof; offering specialized training programs; providing rapid response to help workers who are laid off; and recruitment/placement services for both job seekers and employers.
