Cause Description:
Founded more than a decade ago, The Friends of The New Haven Animal Shelter, Inc., is a volunteer organization dedicated to helping the animals at The New Haven Animal Shelter find responsible, loving homes. To that end, we work to build our volunteer program, provide medical care and socialization for the animals at the shelter, improve the physical condition of the shelter, raise public awareness of the shelter’s services, partner with educational and other animal welfare organizations to improve public understanding of the roles companion animals play in our lives, and above all, find responsible, loving homes for the animals in our care. As part of our efforts, we do the following: • organize and sponsor twice-monthly adoption events in communities throughout the Greater New Haven area. (With North Shore Animal League’s state-of-the-art mobile adoption unit.) • pay for unusual medical care that the animals would not ordinarily receive including x-rays and various diagnostic tests • participate with TEAM, a mobile spay/ neuter facility for cats • sponsor a foster care program for dogs and cats/puppies and kittens who need special attention • offer personal assistance in choosing a companion animal to people who want to adopt from the shelter • work with other rescue groups to place cats and dogs in good homes • appear weekly on the local WTNH-TV News 8’s popular “Pet of the Week” segment • fund various shelter improvements, including an air purifier, stainless steel litter trays, feeding dishes with holders, a dog run, and new cat cages • maintain a Web site on Petfinder.com, which generates many quality adoptions • publish AmongFriends, a twice-yearly newsletter • educate owners about pet care • sponsor fund-raising events, including our gala annual Makin’ Woofie, held every February for almost a decade, and our new festive Mutt Strut, held each fall.
