Cause Description:
Helping Our Teen Girls In Real Life Situations, Inc. (HOTGIRLS) was founded in November 2001 by Dr. Carla Stokes, a health educator, speaker, and life coach for teen girls. HOTGIRLS is a grassroots, youth-driven 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the health and lives of young black women and girls. The organization provides leadership development programs for young women that empower them to design and implement social change projects that tackle HIV/AIDS, violence against women and girls, street harassment, women's health, images in the media and hip hop, and other health and social justice issues that disproportionately impact black women and girls. HOTGIRLS also engages young men and boys in challenging attitudes about masculinity, manhood, and gender-based violence through its Boys Overcoming Social Stereotypes (B.O.S.S.) Initiative. In 2008, HOTGIRLS launched “I Am Worth It”, a national campaign that provides a platform for black girls to affirm their worth and promote positive self-representations online and in their local communities -- while challenging harmful stereotypes about women of color. HOTGIRLS also builds the leadership potential of college students through the S.I.S.T.A. (Sisters Inspiring Sisters to Action) Initiative. In recognition of its innovative health, life skills, technology, and media education programming for girls, the organization received the Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s Georgia State Program Award in 2007.
