Cause Description:
Read to Grow operates on the premise that literacy development begins at birth. Parents play a major role in their child's intellectual and cognitive development. Reading aloud and talking about the words and pictures begins to teach vocabulary and promote school readiness. We work to carry out our mission of promoting early literacy by reinforcing the importance of books and reading in the home. We have three parts to our program of services, Books for Babies ( reaching newborns and their families at their bedside in the hospital with a new book and a visit from a literacy volunteer emphasizing the importance of reading right from birth), Books for Kids ( supplying new and gently used books to underserved school libraries, daycares, pediatric offices and clinics), and our Library Hotline. Together these programs comprise a continuum of literacy services aimed at bringing books into the homes and hearts of children and families in Connecticut, and fulfilling our mission of making reading a central part of family life.
