Founded in 1987, the Rainforest Alliance is an international nonprofit dedicated to the conservation of tropical forests for the benefit of the global community. Its mission, to develop and promote economically viable and socially desirable alternatives to the destruction of this endangered natural resource, is pursued through education, research in the social and natural sciences, and the establishment of cooperative partnerships with businesses, non-profits, local peoples, and governments. Program areas include: timber and tropical agriculture certification, cultivation and coordination of conservation-related media efforts, social justice issues for local communities in biologically diverse areas, and channeling of funds for small, community-based conservation groups.
