Cause Description:
The Foundation Community Arts Initiative is a student and community group based at the University of Pennsylvania. We maintain The Rotunda, which is a community gathering venue for the promotion of arts and culture. This center seeks to bring together the Penn student community with the people of West Philadelphia and the greater Philadelphia area. We work from the belief that art is a catalyst for social change, and that arts events can lead to the formation of meaningful Penn-West Philadelphia partnerships. Arts of all kinds are presented, including live music (hip hop, punk, jazz, electronic, etc etc), multimedia collaboratives, visual arts, film, political events, theater, puppetry, and dance. Events are open to the public for free, with donations encouraged. As an alcohol free venue, The Rotunda also provides a valuable social alternative for students. The Foundation sprung from ideas generated in an Urban Studies seminar led by Dr. Ira Harkavy and Dr. Lee Benson at the University of Pennsylvania.
