Cause Description:
Citizen Advocacy initiates and supports one-on-one advocacy relationships between members of the La Crosse community and people with developmental disabilities. Citizen Advocates defends the rights for those people with developmental disabilities that cannot represent themselves. Citizen Advocacy focused on long-term relationships that bring people together to Provide Advocacy, Extend Protection, and Create Friendships. Since 1979,the La Crosse Citizen Advocacy Program has been successful in asking members of our community to become involved in the lives of the individuals with developmental and related disabilities. The task force that initiates the local program was then known as the Association for Retarded Citizens (ARC) and while their name has changed they continue to be our sponsoring association. La Crosse in one of only thirty-two communities in the nation that is able to offer this type of individual advocacy to our community. Similar programs exist in New Zealand, Canada, and England. Citizen Advocacy Programs are based on principles designed by Dr. Wolfe Wolfensberger, of Syracuse University, New York. We have a vision of La Crosse as an extraordinarily responsive and supportive community that promotes the rights and interests of every citizen. We believe that life will be better for people with disabilities when the community members are personally committed to being involved on an individual basis at Citizen Advocacy.
