Cause Description:
Founded in 1991, the creation of the Assyrian Aid Society of America (AAS-A) was a direct response to the crippling hardships suffered by Assyrians in the ancestral homeland of Bet Nahrain in Northern Iraq as a result of Saddam Hussein's policies and the Gulf War. Working in collaboration with sister organization Assyrian Aid Society-Iraq (originally founded as the Assyrian Aid and Social Society) over the past decade, AAS-A has vigorously pursued its Mission Statement by funding building programs, irrigation and electrification projects, education programs at every level, and medical projects which include shipments of medicines and supplies as well as the maintenance of free medical clinics. Today AAS-A has chapters in Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Diego, San Jose, and California's Central Valley, as well as the East Coast (Connecticut, New York) and soon in Las Vegas, Nevada. The national headquarters is located in the San Francisco Bay Area. Although independent and not formally associated, Assyrian Aid Society organizations are also at work in Australia, Canada, Germany, and the United Kingdom. The Assyrian Aid Society of America is a charitable 501(c)(3) organization supported solely by private contributions. In fiscal year 2001, approximately 93 cents of every dollar donated to AAS-A went directly to projects in Northern Iraq.
