Cause Description:
The mission of Advocates for Survivors of Torture and Trauma (ASTT) is to alleviate the suffering of those who have experienced the trauma of torture and war, to educate the local and world community about the needs of torture victims, and to work to eliminate torture in the world. ASTT seeks to carry out its mission by 1) providing comprehensive direct and referral services,  including mental and physical health, legal and social services -- to individuals who have experienced torture and/or war trauma; 2) expanding the network of services available to torture and war trauma survivors through training other professionals; 3) increasing public knowledge about the consequences of torture and war trauma; 4) working with others to increase the resources available to survivors and to advocate against the use of torture as a political tool. ASTTs activities focus on survivors of torture and trauma who have fled their home countries and resettled in the mid-Atlantic region. Many of these individuals were community leaders in their homelands. By providing them with the resources they need to reclaim their lives and once again become active involved citizens, ASTT believes it is making an important contribution, not just to those who directly utilize its services, but to the cities and towns where its clients live, as well as to the region and our nation as a whole.
