Steps to Independence/ Tides Center

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Cause Description:
"Conductive education" is an intensive program for children with motor disabilities such as cerebral palsy. Originally developed by neurologist Andras Peto in Budapest, Hungary, conductive education combines the objectives of educators and therapists into a holistic educational program which promotes a child's cognitive and emotional development as well as motor function. Visitors to CE classrooms often note that the children not only function better, but also seem happier, more self-assured and less handicapped. Steps to Independence(formerly CE of Pittsburgh), begun in 1998, offers an annual summer camp program of conductive education for children and youth with cerebral palsy and other motor disorders. Fully credentialed and experienced educators known as "conductors" travel from Hungary to work with the children in an intensive program which meets each weekday for five weeks. Gains made by the children in the summer can then serve as the foundation for continued functional and cognitive gains throughout the school year.
