Cause Description:
The LVEJO is a grass root, not-for-profit, 501-C-3, community based organization begun in 1998 in Chicago's largest Latino community. Its predecessor, the Gary School Environmental Justice Project, was born in 1995 during the successful struggle of parents and community members to protect our children from polluted air by moving the site of a new public elementary school to a safer location. Two years of organizing and air quality studies resulted in the school being sited in a safer location and a new organization being born. From the beginning LVEJO developed a peer leadership model among children, youth and adults using a popular education model. We are now a multi-issue organization: environmental and economic and justice, youth, public transportation, end racism in parks and recreation In the last year LVEJO has expanded the focus of its work to the broader issue of sustainable development through democratic community participation in planning and decision making.
