Cause Description:
An Action Tank for national service, City Year seeks to demonstrate, improve, and promote the concept of national service as a means of building a stronger democracy. City Year envisions a day when voluntary national service will be a common expectation for all citizens. City Year unites a diverse group of 17 to 24 year-old young people for a year of full-time, rigorous community service, leadership development, and civic engagement. With a focus on educating, challenging, and developing the elementary and middle school children in thirteen communities across the country, City Year seeks to develop a generation of citizen leaders prepared to take action for the common good. Already, nearly 6,000 City Year alumni have dedicated a year of their lives to service, and many demonstrate an ongoing commitment to social change and civic engagement as student leaders, teachers, social entrepreneurs, community activists, and members of the private sector. Founded in Boston in 1988, City Year has established programs in Boston; Chicago; Cleveland; Columbia, SC; Columbus; Detroit; New Hampshire; Rhode Island; San Antonio; San Jose; Philadelphia; Seattle/King County and Washington, D.C., with more sites to be launched in 2002. Lead investors in City Year include Cisco Systems, Compaq Computer Corporation, MFS Investment Management, and The Timberland Company. City Year is a proud member of AmeriCorps.
