Founded by Stephen Sondheim in 1981, Young Playwrights Inc. is the only professional theater in the United States dedicated to identifying, developing, and promoting playwrights aged 18 and under: on stage, in the classroom, and in the artistic community. Young Playwrights Inc.'s celebrated programs for young people and their teachers and families (among them, the Young Playwrights Festival and Writing On Your Feet! Playwriting Workshops), are a model for young playwright development programs across the country. At the core of Young Playwrights Inc.'s mission is a profoundly simple notion that changes young people's lives: that every young person has something valuable to say and an inherent right to be heard. YPI is the recipient of an Obie, the NY Drama Critics Circle Award, the Alliance for the Arts Schools and Culture Award, the Children's Theater Foundation Medallion, and the Jujamcyn Theaters Award, and was a consultant to the Presidents' Summit for America's Future.
