Cause Description:
"What is best for this child?" is the agonizing question a judge must address several times each day for La Crosse County's abused and neglected children. The answer will effect the rest of a child's life. In deciding something as weighty as the fate of a child, a judge answers these questions: "Will he be safe living again with a parent? Or, might he be maltreated again? Will he find more security and nurturance in foster care? Or, will he drift through multiple foster homes, feeling more desperate and alienated with each passing week, month, year?" Maybe he should be freed for adoption. But, is there a chance that he can return to his own family, so central to a child's sense of self, after all?" To make decisions about a child's future, a judge simply MUST know everything possible about the child's circumstances. That's where CASA for Kids, a child advocacy program of the YWCA, comes in. Trained volunteers meet with assigned children weekly and report on their progress to the court monthly, providing necessary information so that these children can achieve permanent homes as quickly as possible and reach their full potential.
