Cause Description:
Women's Health Leadership was created to recognize and support the leadership of women in communities who already are making a difference but have the desire to strengthen and build on their leadership to make a greater positive impact on the health of women. WHL works to improve the health and well-being of low income women and underrepresented populations by enhancing the leadership capacity of emerging women leaders who work at the community level in California. WHL's approach to leadership development is unique, involving a year-long process that draws on the experiences of grassroots leaders to ensure that the health priorities of their communities are being appropriately addressed. Each year, fifty women from all ethnicities and ages, from various professional disciplines (including “non-traditional” professionals such as Community Outreach Workers, lay counselors, volunteers, etc.), from rural, urban and suburban regions, and from various coordinates along the spectrum of leadership are selected from throughout California to participate in a year-long learning community. Tremendous outcomes have resulted. In addition, a formalized Alumni Network exists to strengthen and mobilize WHL graduates. During our six year history, a dynamic learning community has been created of 300 women representing 42 counties in California and over 20 ethnic cultures. These women through their participation in WHL receive and provide—to one another and their communities—technical support, resources, sisterhood and unprecedented opportunities for networking and collaboration. The Alumni Network serves to inform policymakers and other decision-makers affecting the health of women. WHL is proud to be a center of the Public Health Institute, a non-profit organization of over 100 projects working to promote and enhance the health, well-being and quality of life for all people.
